Tips to Build a Successful Game Business: Insights from Ben Pommeraud

Game dev meet up

Game development is more than just creating fun, interactive experiences—it’s a business. Building a successful game company requires a perfect balance of creativity, data-driven strategies, and sound economic decisions. At the final GameUp Africa Meetup of 2024, Ben Pommeraud, General Manager for Strategic Initiatives at King, a Swedish video game developer and publisher that specializes in social games, shared invaluable insights on how aspiring developers can craft profitable, impactful games while keeping players engaged. Here’s a breakdown of Ben’s talk, which explored the “nine key ingredients” for creating a high-potential game business.

The 9 Ingredients for a Thriving Game Business

  1. Gaming is a business—treat it like one.
While creating games is often fueled by passion and creativity, remember that the ultimate goal of a gaming company is profitability. Without a sustainable financial structure, even the most innovative ideas may not survive long term.
  2. Keep it simple, keep it fun.
When starting out, avoid overly complex game concepts that demand more resources than you have. A simple, fun game can resonate with players just as strongly as a large-scale project. Simplicity often wins when resources are limited.
  3. Leverage AI for smarter, faster development.
Artificial intelligence has revolutionized game development. From generating textures and animations to building adaptive gameplay mechanics, AI tools can reduce production time and costs significantly. Utilize these advancements to maximize your efficiency.
  4. Iterate, don’t innovate radically.
Growth often comes from small, incremental improvements. Ben shared this thought-provoking advice: “If you improve by 1% every week for a year, you’ll be 1.7x better at the end.” Focus on polishing what you already have rather than attempting drastic overhauls.
  5. Know your game metrics.
Data is your greatest ally. Metrics like player retention, session time, and in-game purchases provide valuable insights into what’s working (and what’s not). Make data-informed decisions to optimize your game’s performance and appeal.
  6. Monetization is a feature, not an afterthought.
A successful game must integrate monetization into its core design. Ask yourself: “What would make someone spend money on my game?” Consider in-app purchases, ads, and premium content as part of your player experience.
  7. Think globally, not locally.
The best games transcend borders. Design your games to appeal to a universal audience while retaining unique cultural influences that make them stand out. A globally relevant game will have far greater market potential.
  8. Be the best in your niche.
Don’t try to do everything—focus on excelling in one area. Identify a fast-growing genre, commit to it, and aim to become the best in that space. Your reputation in a specific niche can propel your growth and attract loyal players.
  9. Build your dream team.
Success in game development isn’t a solo effort. Surround yourself with a team of talented individuals who share your vision. Embrace mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow together. “Fail together, win together.”

Spotlight on Zulu Battle by Kabore Issouf Wendkouni

As part of the session, indie game developer Kabore Issouf Wendkouni from Ivory Coast showcased his latest project, Zulu Battle, a unique time-based strategy game inspired by the classic rock-paper-scissors mechanic.

In Zulu Battle, players select strategic cards to outwit their opponents in battles that demand quick thinking and sharp decision-making. The game, currently in beta on the Play Store with over 100 installs, has been well-received by players, and Issouf is gathering feedback to refine the experience further.

Plans for Zulu Battle include introducing in-app purchases, such as customizable skins and weapons, to enhance the player experience. This demonstrates how indie developers can use beta feedback to polish their games while incorporating monetization strategies for long-term success.
