Introducing the ‘GameUp Africa Jam for Democracy’

Disinformation has become a critical issue in Nigeria, undermining trust in democratic institutions, spreading false information, and influencing public opinion through manipulated media. From election campaigns to social issues, disinformation campaigns can destabilize governance, create divisions, and erode the foundations of democracy. This December, we’re turning up the heat with the GameUp Africa Jam for Democracy—an epic collaboration between Maliyo Games,  Global Game Jam, and the  U.S. Consulate General Lagos.

We’re calling on all storytellers, game developers, artists, sound designers, and civic activists aged 18 – 35, in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana to step up and use their game development skills to tackle the dangerous spread of disinformation that threatens democratic governance. We want you to be part of this movement!

Registration is now open for the most exciting game jam of the year. After a careful assessment, the best and brightest talents will be selected to join this epic event. If you’re one of the chosen few, you’ll receive an invite to our exclusive onboarding session and access to the Game Jam’s Discord server.

• 4th December: Application Deadline
• 9th December: Game Jam officially starts (Hybrid format: in-person and online) 🌍.
• 20th December: Game Jam ends.
• 13th January: Announcement of winners
• Feb – Apr 2025: Post-Game Jam Support
