About us
GameUp Africa, an initiative by Maliyo Games, a leading pan-African mobile game development studio, was born from a vision to share African stories with the world through games.
Founded in 2012, Maliyo Games recognized the need for individuals with the right blend of technical and creative skills to bring this vision to life.
However, the lack of formal game development education in African universities hindered Maliyo’s ability to find talent with the necessary competencies.
To address this challenge and fuel its growth, Maliyo Games created GameUp Africa, which has now become the largest and most impactful game development training program on the continent.
Brief History
The very first cohort of GameUp Africa had 5 participants. The programme was meant to start in-person at Maliyo's Lagos office in March 2020. Due to the pandemic, the programme moved online.
GameUp Africa officially launched after Maliyo Games partnered with Google to scale it up. The training was 100% remote with learners from Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. 300 people joined that year.
Following it's successful roll out, the programme expanded to 6 more countries with 1,500 learners. Illka Pananem the Supercell CEO gave the keynote address at the graduation event.
We expanded the number of courses, adding game art to the engineering programme. We ran two successful cohorts in May and August.
